Iriditions: Classicly simple.

Iridescent gold or silver accents on deep garnet glass.

I hand cut and assemble the glass so that the iridescent accent moves and cracks in the heat of the kiln. I finish each piece with several steps of grinding and polishing. The sandblasted top surface comes out of the final firing as a satiny sheen that contrasts well with the shinier accent. This attention to detail and extensive handwork means that each piece requires several hours, plus two to three firings, to complete.

The reds and blacks of the hand built ceramic serving bowls complement the translucency of the fused glass pieces. The texture of the exposed clay gives each piece an earthiness that supports the fluid colors of the glazed surfaces.

I began the Iriditions series in 2006 with a few pieces to develop the technique and overall style. This year, I plan to make only about a dozen serving bowls and platters. Available at A Show of Hands from $75.
